iPhone Duo price in India and screen crack reports explained

iPhone Duo in India: ₹3 Lakh, 6,000 Units, One Cracked Screen

Apple’s first folding phone went on sale in India on 23 October. Within hours, two stories were racing around the internet: that its screen cracks along the hinge, and that somebody had already jailbroken it.

Both stories are real. Neither means what the headlines suggest. If you have just spent ₹2,99,900 on an iPhone Duo, or you are deciding whether to, here is what is actually established, what is still anecdote, and what your options are in India specifically.

iPhone Duo price in India

Four storage options, all ex-showroom on Apple’s India store:

  • 256GB — ₹2,99,900
  • 512GB — ₹3,24,900
  • 1TB — ₹3,74,900
  • 2TB — ₹4,49,900

Two colours: Star White and Night Sky. For context, the same base iPhone Duo is $1,999 in the United States — around ₹1.75 lakh before duties. The Indian iPhone Duo price is what import duty and GST do to a halo product.

Launch offers, as listed by Apple India: trade-in credit up to ₹81,500 on an eligible older iPhone, no-cost EMI for up to 12 months with partner banks, up to ₹7,000 instant cashback on select American Express, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank cards, and three months each of Apple Music, Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade.

Pre-orders opened 16 October and sales began 23 October through Apple’s India website, the Apple Store app, and authorised retailers including Croma, Vijay Sales and Reliance Digital. Six Apple retail stores handled pre-order pickup: Saket in Delhi, DLF Mall of India in Noida, Hebbal in Bengaluru, BKC and Borivali in Mumbai, and Koregaon Park in Pune.

Supply is the part worth knowing. Mint estimated roughly 6,000 units for India’s entire first week — Apple has not confirmed that number, so treat it as a reported estimate rather than a fact. Walk-in stock was limited on launch day, several configurations shipped with extended delivery estimates, and the iPhone Duo reportedly sold out on Blinkit within five minutes.

Crackgate: what actually broke on the iPhone Duo

Within about a day of launch, photographs started appearing on Reddit and the MacRumors forums showing damage to the inner folding display. The pattern was consistent: the fault sits right along the hinge, usually showing as a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen.

The one verified case

The report that holds up is from an owner in Australia. They had the phone about six hours and had opened it fewer than twenty times. While showing it to a friend, they felt something move near the internal hinge, under the screen. They kept opening it, heard a crack, and the display broke along the fold. They say there were no marks on the inner screen or the external hinge beforehand.

They took it to an Apple Store, which replaced the iPhone Duo immediately. Reddit moderators asked for more evidence, received additional photos and Apple’s repair paperwork, and marked the post verified. What the moderators could verify is that the damage and the repair are real. They could not verify what caused it.

What is not established

Quite a lot, and this is where most coverage stops being careful.

Nobody knows how many units are affected. MacRumors says plainly that it is unknown how widespread the problem is and that user damage may be a factor in some cases. Several of the circulating photos are of demo units in Chinese stores, where the iPhone Duo went on sale hours before the US, and the backstory for most of those images is unknown — a demo unit folded a few thousand times by strangers in a mall is not the same test as your pocket.

One commenter claimed at least four more cases on Chinese social media. No links, no verification. PhoneArena, which went through the evidence carefully, landed on exactly one verified case and said so: not proof of a widespread problem.

There is also no Apple statement. The phrase “day one manufacturing error” has been widely quoted as though Apple said it. It comes from the owner’s account of what a store technician told them. That is not nothing, but it is not an Apple position, and a technician’s guess at the counter is not a root-cause finding. The broken unit was reportedly sent to California for analysis; no findings have been published.

The fake-image pile-on, and why it collapsed

Worth noting because it cuts the other way. When the Australian photos went up, commenters insisted they were fabricated: the screen looked too glossy, so the owner must have peeled off the nano-texture layer; the image was AI-generated, because look at the extra fingers and how everyone in the frame is wearing black.

The owner’s answers were mundane. The white streak is a band of dead pixels, not a reflection. The black blob is Markup, used to cover a photo of their child that was on screen. And locals pointed out that in that part of the world, that is simply how people dress.

So the skepticism was loud, specific, and wrong. That is a useful reminder in both directions: “it’s fake” is as lazy a default as “it’s a scandal.”

The jailbreak: real researchers, and a real fix

The iPhone Duo was jailbroken on launch day, running iOS 27.1, by a hacker team called Calif. Their video shows icons and widgets being dragged around the home screen and a custom anime character placed on it.

This is not an anonymous boast. Calif includes Stefan Esser, a security researcher who has worked on iOS internals for years, and the week before the Duo launched the team demonstrated an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0.1 — the device rebooted and still had root access afterwards. That is a serious piece of work, and we were wrong to imply otherwise in the first version of this article.

What they have said matters more than the video. Esser told German outlet Heise that there will be no tool for end users, though a proof of concept may follow. The bugs behind the iOS 27.0.1 jailbreak have been or are being disclosed to Apple, and — this is the part you can act on — most of those vulnerabilities are already fixed in iOS 27.2. Esser also said AI assisted in developing the jailbreak, without explaining how.

Some caution still applies. MacRumors did not independently verify the Duo jailbreak; the details come from Calif’s own posts and videos. Nobody has confirmed whether the iOS 27.1 jailbreak on the Duo is untethered or grants root — those claims attach to the iPhone 18 Pro on 27.0.1. The “privilege escalation” line that appeared in several write-ups still has no stated source.

So the practical instruction for an iPhone Duo owner is no longer “nothing to do here.” It is: update to iOS 27.2. This is responsible disclosure working the way it is supposed to — researchers find bugs, tell Apple, Apple ships a fix, and the fix only helps the people who install it.

The thing that should actually worry you: fake iPhone Duo pre-order pages

This is the real danger in the iPhone Duo story, and it has almost nothing to do with hinges or jailbreaks.

Malwarebytes researchers found fake iPhone Duo pre-order pages built to look like Apple’s own site, dangling a $500 voucher and free AppleCare+ under an “Authorized Partner Exclusive” banner. The pre-order form is theatre — fill it in and you get a “Pre-Order Successful” message, while the page does nothing with your details. The attack happens elsewhere.

A hidden frame checks your iOS version and steers iPhone visitors into Safari, which is the browser the exploit targets. Simply opening the page can trigger it. You do not have to submit the form, download anything, or tap a malicious button.

The code matches DarkSword, an iPhone exploit chain that Google and other researchers documented back in March 2026. If it succeeds, what it reaches is not trivial: Apple Notes, your installed-app list, saved credentials, messages, contacts, call history, voicemail, email, calendars, photos, cached location — and cryptocurrency wallets specifically, including MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet, Exodus and Tonkeeper.

Two things keep this from being a catastrophe. Apple patched the DarkSword vulnerabilities in March, so a device on current iOS should be protected. And Malwarebytes did not test the payload on a real iPhone or observe data actually leaving a device, so whether the campaign is succeeding against anyone is unconfirmed.

Why this matters so much in India specifically: roughly 6,000 launch units, sold out on Blinkit in five minutes, resale premiums of ₹50,000 and up. That is a population of people actively hunting for a way to buy an iPhone Duo, which is exactly the frame of mind a fake pre-order page is designed for.

What to do about it

Go to apple.com or a named retailer like Croma, Vijay Sales or Reliance Digital by typing the address yourself. Not through an ad, not through a WhatsApp forward, not through a link in a Telegram deals group. Turn on automatic iOS updates under Settings, General, Software Update.

If you think you already opened something like this: update iOS and restart the phone — Malwarebytes found no mechanism that survives a reboot, though a restart cannot undo data already taken. Change any passwords that may have been exposed, from a different device you trust. If you keep cryptocurrency on that phone, treat the wallet as burned: create a new one with a new recovery phrase, move the funds, and secure any exchange accounts separately.

If your iPhone Duo cracks, what are your options in India?

Two things reportedly apply from launch, and both are worth confirming with Apple India rather than taking from a blog, this one included.

First, the return window. Launch buyers have a two-week window to return the device. If you bought on 23 October and you are nervous, that clock is already running and runs out in early November.

Second, warranty. An iPhone Duo hinge failure during normal use should fall inside the standard one-year warranty — that is the reasonable reading, and it is what happened for the Australian owner, who was given a replacement on the spot rather than a repair quote. Indian consumer protection law also gives you rights against a product that is not of the quality promised, separate from whatever a warranty document says.

Practical advice if you own one: photograph the inner display now, unfolded, in good light, before anything happens. If a fault appears later, a dated photograph showing a clean screen is the difference between a warranty claim and an argument about whether you dropped it.

The ₹50,000 iPhone Duo premium problem

With roughly 6,000 units reportedly allocated for the first week, the predictable happened. Resale listings appeared at up to ₹50,000 above retail, and some retailers have been reported asking considerably more.

Paying a scalper premium on this particular phone is a bad trade, and not only on price. Buy outside Apple’s authorised channel and you are the one arguing about warranty eligibility later — on a device whose most discussed component is the hinge. On a ₹3 lakh phone with open durability questions, the clean paper trail is worth more than two weeks of waiting.

iPhone Duo or Galaxy Z Fold 8?

Samsung has been selling folding phones in India for seven generations, which is the entire argument. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra line starts well below the iPhone Duo and arrives with a service network that has been repairing folding screens here for years.

What the iPhone Duo offers is iOS on a folding screen, which no other company can sell you, and for people already deep in Apple’s ecosystem that is the whole point. What it does not offer is a track record. Samsung’s early Folds had their own failures and the company engineered through them over several years. Apple is at generation one.

If you want a folding phone and you are not committed to iOS, the mature option is the obvious one. If you specifically want this, the reasonable move is to wait a few weeks and see whether the crack reports stay at one verified case or start multiplying.

The Honest Fine Print

We updated this article, and we got something wrong first time. The original version treated the jailbreak as “a group calling itself Calif” with a video, and told you there was nothing to act on. That was unfair to the researchers and, more importantly, wrong on the practical point: the bugs have been disclosed to Apple and most are fixed in iOS 27.2, which is a thing you can go and do. We also published without the fake pre-order pages in it, which is the one genuinely dangerous item in this whole story. A reader flagged it. Both sections were added on 25 October.

One verified case is one verified case. We have written this piece around a single confirmed incident and a pile of unverified photographs. That is genuinely all there is right now. If you came here wanting us to tell you the iPhone Duo is defective, we cannot, because nobody knows that yet.

We also cannot tell you it is fine. Absence of confirmed failures three days after launch is not evidence of durability. Both of the honest answers are uncomfortable, and anyone giving you a confident one this week is making it up.

The supply figure is an estimate. The 6,000-units number comes from Mint and has not been confirmed by Apple. We are using it because it is the best available, not because it is established.

We have not handled one. No review unit, no hands-on. Everything here is sourced reporting and owner accounts, which is why we have been specific about who said what rather than writing as if we had checked the hinge ourselves.

Our own pattern, admitted. We wrote about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and not the standard Fold 8, and our search data has been telling us for weeks that readers wanted the cheaper one. We mention it here because the same temptation applies to Apple coverage: write about the expensive halo product because it is exciting, and skip the one people are actually buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the iPhone Duo price in India?

₹2,99,900 for 256GB, ₹3,24,900 for 512GB, ₹3,74,900 for 1TB and ₹4,49,900 for 2TB, ex-showroom from Apple India. Trade-in credit of up to ₹81,500 and up to ₹7,000 bank cashback can reduce what you actually pay.

Is the iPhone Duo screen really breaking?

One case has been verified, by Reddit moderators who saw additional photos and Apple’s repair paperwork. Other reports exist but have not been verified, and several circulating photos are of store demo units with unknown histories. There is currently no evidence of a widespread defect, and no evidence against one either.

Does the jailbreak mean my iPhone Duo is unsafe?

Not directly — Calif says it will not release an end-user tool, and the bugs have been disclosed to Apple. But there is something to do: most of the vulnerabilities involved are fixed in iOS 27.2, so install it. A fix you have not installed protects nobody.

Are the fake iPhone Duo pre-order pages dangerous?

Potentially, yes — more so than anything else in this story. They use the DarkSword exploit chain and can trigger just from opening the page in Safari, with no tap required. Apple patched DarkSword in March 2026, so an updated iPhone should be protected. Only ever pre-order from apple.com or a named retailer whose address you typed yourself.

Can I return the iPhone Duo if I am worried?

Launch buyers reportedly have a two-week return window, so if you bought on 23 October that closes in early November. Confirm the exact terms with Apple India for your order rather than relying on reported policy.

Should I pay above retail to get one now?

We would not. A grey-market premium on a ₹3 lakh folding phone means paying extra for a weaker warranty position on the exact component everyone is asking questions about.

Is the iPhone Duo worth it over an iPhone 17 Pro?

For most people, no — you are paying roughly double for a folding screen in its first generation. Our iPhone 18 Pro price breakdown covers the conventional end of Apple’s lineup, which is where the value sits.

Bottom line

The iPhone Duo is a first-generation folding phone at ₹2,99,900 in a market with roughly 6,000 launch units, one verified screen failure, and a jailbreak claim that currently amounts to a video. None of that makes it a bad phone. All of it makes it a phone to buy with your eyes open, from an authorised seller, with a photograph of the screen taken on day one.

If you already own one, you have a return window that closes soon and a warranty that should cover a hinge failure from normal use. If you are waiting, waiting costs you very little — and in a few weeks we will know whether “Crackgate” was one unlucky unit or the start of something. We will follow the same rule we applied when checking festive sale discounts: the claim that matters is the one you can verify.
